Secret Pleasures: Four Asian Films about Love, Longing and Fishhooks



Four Eclectic Asian Films Have Little In Common But Play To An Art House Aesthetic
The movie compilation "Secret Pleasures" is one of the more bizarre collections that I've encountered in quite a while. The films are so eclectic, so different. Many times the selections of a box set are focused by country of origin, or director or star, or through similar themes or genres. Very little draws these disparate films together except for the tenuous branding that they are "Four Asian Films About Love, Longing, And Fishhooks." The set is more likely to appeal to someone with an art house aesthetic, however, with the quirky choices being experimental, even avant-garde, and strikingly personal. Within "Secrets Pleasures," there is a disturbing psychological puzzler, a lesbian piece of lost love, a wry exploration of the singles scene, and an old-fashioned multi-generational melodrama. Independently, they each have their strengths, but grouped together they have a random eccentricity that struck me as a bit odd.
