It is not perfect, but it is good.
The singing of Murray, Masterson and Garrett leaves very little to desire. However, the mannerism and voice quality of Christofer Robson is too much for my taste. The production is not exceptional and the customes are silly. Nevertheless, this is an enjoyable work that really deserves to be obtained and watched more than once. The music is superb, and Mackerras handles it smoothly and elegantly. Despite all my misgivings, it gave me lots of pleasure.
Xerxes
Xerxes is a 1988 Thames Television production under the direction of Nocholas Hytner. Charles Mackerras leads the Orchestra of English National Opera and The Chorus of the National Opera is led by Chorus Master Martin Handley. Ann Murray plays the lead role of Xerxes. Hearing Xerxes in English might sound strange but one has to consider that Handel himself lived in England and was both English and German. Therefore hearing Xerxes in English is quite natural. The booklet contains a short writing about the composer and his work, the plot, the performance and short biographies over the performers. This performance is brilliant in every way. Amazing singers, breathtaking costumes and a sound quality that makes the viewer feel as he was watching it live. Highly recommended indeed. 5/5.
